Qianlong Folk Song
Hermit
When purple and gold shall appeal no
more,
Nor allegiance any longer binding to
the throne,
I’ll retire from this all And take my retreat, and peace of
mind Under the cool shade of a pagoda tree By the brook and
in the hermit shed.
May the Taoist garment replace the
vestment,
And let a bamboo stick, the baton;
Let Mother Nature embrace me in her
Bosom And comfort my heart,
Wearied in that vanity fair.
For one gets real felicity
Not from the scrambling for fame
and fortune
But from a sincere taking
Of whatever Nature
So generously confers.
Take, for instance, the rising sun as
you lean
Upon the bamboo railing in the morn;
And the departing sails
That draw your sight so far,
Far as the river flows and the land
goes;
And take, too, the migrating geese,
Their orderly flight scribing in the sky
Word about autumn’s coming.
Count enough plain food and drink,
Which contributes to bodily health
As does undefiled wisdom to mental
fit.
The road to the friend’s house
Is covered by fallen flowers,
(How he likes it that way!)
With the brook gurgling and birds
whistling
All along the way.
It is a perfect symposium when best
friends gather
When banquet and music entertain
both the host and the guests.
Moon lights my way home
With her silver luster.
O, Moon! How much I prefer my tub
and shack
To a life at court!
Fame and power but enslave;
Yet few know when to stop and
retire.
